Paula stared in disbelief at the mess on her desk. "How did you do that?" she asked the cat, who was hunkered down in what used to be her manuscript, placidly cleaning his golden paw. The shredded pages didn't resemble her magnum opus, her life's work, her creative baby. That lump of torn paper resembled ...

"You didn't, did you?" she muttered. She lifted the portly cat and inspected the pages. "Well, that's a relief at least. I was afraid it might be your new litter box."

Ezra PoundCat wiggled in her arms and she let him slip to the floor. Two months of work all shredded because a damn cat got mad. And why did he get mad -- because her loser boyfriend decided to leave! "Trust me, we're better off," she told the cat. Or rather told his retreating butt as he stalked out of the room, muttering angrily.

"Now what?" She turned back to the desk but her doorbell rang. Glancing out through her office window, she saw a familiar dark sedan at the curb. Her heart sank. "Oh, shit. That's all I need right now."
