What I use is my emotions, my experiences. How did I feel when a dear friend died? Or when my children were born? And I use my fields of expertise. Antiques, marketing, advertising, art.
One thing I'm really careful to do is not to use my sexual experiences. What happens in my bedroom stays there. My characters have the sex life they want, and not mine, which is why I never find writing sensual scenes stale. Different every time!
