Genre choice

I usually come up with Sunday's topic while swimming at the gym. I do some water aerobics and then laps. I often find that I can work out tricky plot problems this way, and come up with topics for the blogs where I am blog Maven.

As I was paddling, I wondered ... how did we each come up with our genre choices? I'm moving more and more away from 'romantic suspense' and more toward 'mystery with an element of romance'. I was mentally composing a query letter when this struck me as awkward, at best, to put in a letter.

So tell me ... what led you to your genre choice? Was it an event or the types of books you've always liked to read, or a belief in Happily Ever After?
